Art as a meeting point

With Andrea Buddensieg, Otobong Nkanga, Joanna Warsza
Discussion organized by Antje Majewski /ƒƒ

„Art as a meeting point“ was a term that came up spontanously in a discussion between Otobong Nkanga and Antje Majewski. As artists, they felt they could meet in the same field, in which they could move around freely. This field was created by them at the same time as they were part of it.

Where is the space/ field, in which art is created, situated? Who is involved in creating it? In what way does this field articulate itself? Are there several fields? Can art transmit / communicate, even if we don’t know “what it means”, because it was produced in a different culture? Could misunderstandings produce a “creole” understanding that still transports the original while transforming it?

In the discussion we could revisit the term “relational esthetics”, starting not by Nicolas Bourriaud but by Édouard Glissant and his “One World in Relation” – trying to describe a theory that could involve encounters, situationist events, political movements, but also art objects in the physical sense, like sculptures and paintings – produced by single or multiple authors.

Otobong Nkanga is an artist from Nigeria, based in Antwerp. She is working with photography, painting and performances. Her work has been shown amongst others in Tate Modern, London; Kunsthalle Bern; Studio Museum Harlem, NY; and the Biennales of Sao Paolo, Bruxelles, Sharjah and Dakar.

Joanna Warsza is working as a curator on creating political events that try to actually change reality. She was co-curator of the last Berlin Biennale (2012) and founder of the Laura Palmer Foundation (2006-11). She is curator of the Georgian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale.

Andrea Buddensieg is curator and project manager of the project GAM – Global Art and the Museum. She was co-curator of the exhibition The Global Contemporary: Art Worlds after 1989 at ZKM and has published several books on the subject of Global Art.
